GlamSweep

As a fellow makeup enthusiast, I never look forward to the aftermath of cleaning my makeup brushes after getting ready for a night out. Especially since dirty makeup brushes can have many negative effects on your skin including acne breakouts and various skin irritations. When I clean my makeup brushes, I struggle the most with finding ways to get all the product out of the bristles. I found that the best method to clean brushes is to have a dish with some sort of "lifting" texture to allow the leftover makeup to dissolve. GlamSweep is a revolutionary makeup cleaner prototype designed to simplify and streamline the tedious task of cleaning makeup brushes. With just one click of the button, this innovative device effortlessly removes makeup residue, oils, and bacteria from your brushes, ensuring a hygienic and flawless makeup application every time. The device features a user-friendly interface, making it easy for both makeup professionals and enthusiasts to incorporate into their beauty routines.

Ideation & Construction

Using Bambu Studios, and On Shape, I was able to create my own 3D makeup cleaner dish. The way that this dish would work with/without a spinner, would be by adding water and your favorite face wash and rubbing the makeup brush in a 360 motion. The 3D texture, allows for any dirty leftover product to easily remove itself from the brush. The 3D texture of the dish is strategically designed to optimize the removal of any residual makeup products from the brushes. This textured surface, combined with the swirling motion, creates a dynamic cleaning environment, effectively dislodging and washing away makeup particles. The user-friendly design promotes convenience, making it an ideal accessory for beauty enthusiasts and professionals alike. The thoughtful integration of a spinner mechanism enhances the user experience, providing an efficient cleaning process for makeup brushes.

Step 1

Using Bambu Studios to 3D Print my makeup cleaner (Time: 52 Minutes)

Step 2

Next I moved onto my Adafruit circuit board with an attached continuous servo component. I used a basic button with a continuous servo to add the 360 rotation.

Execution

When making “GlamSweep” I used a clear acrylic riser (cut by using CNC milling), to hold up the brush, and a dish at the bottom. I used a box to hide the Adafruit circuit board in the back, and used pink paper to cover the background from the wires/board. For the button, I cut a black foam in a square size to hid the external button connection. Using Python and Mu Editor program, I coded for the motor (servo mode) to spin in a 360 degree rotation for an interval of 8 seconds, when the button is pressed.

"Only Murders In The Building”

Brainstorming

When brainstorming for this project,  I knew I wanted to do a building of some sort and I decided on doing the Upper West Side apartment building from the Hulu TV series, “Only Murders In The Building” starring Selena Gomez, Steve Martin and Martin Short. It is a series about three true-crime podcast enthusiasts who investigate a murder in their apartment building, leading to comedic and suspenseful discoveries. This show is not only a creative and thrilling series but, also was nostalgic for me because when season 1 dropped, I would watch every Tuesday on Hulu with my mom. This comedy murder mystery inspired me a great deal because it contains a variety of colors and theatrics that I knew I wanted to include in my project.

I mainly took inspiration from the introduction of the TV show that rolls through the credits with animations zooming into each window. Then when the title comes on to the screen it zooms out to the main trio looking out from the building.

  • For the silhouettes in the windows, I knew I wanted to have noticeable “mystery” icons peeking through.
  • I settled on a cat, light bulb, person profile, detective, and murder with knife.
  • On the bottom left I found the exact silhouette of the main trio that I intended to put on the outside of the building like the intro from the show.

Ideation

Construction

After trying 3 different building types, I landed on doing a 2" x 3" window building cut-out with slightly bigger windows to make space for the silhouettes and have more light come through.

From the back of the building, I cut out a bottom slit to connect the microboard.

Code used: A neopixel code that alternates a 4 different color sequence:

  • Off Mode - All neopixels off
  • On Mode - All neopixels turn to first color (red)
  • Animation Mode - All neopixels turn to the set order for a 2 second interval , (1- Red, 2- Yellow , 3- Green, 4- Blue) following TV show main color palette

Execution

Materials I used to build the apartment:

  • Black cardstock paper
  • Bristol paper
  • Hot glue gun
  • Double-sided tape
  • Color-markers
  • Black Sharpie
